Donovan Mitchell Agrees to Four-Year, $273 Million Maximum Extension With Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers have ensured their franchise player will remain in Northeast Ohio for years to come.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, All-NBA guard Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension with the Cavaliers. The deal includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker, giving Mitchell added flexibility while reaffirming Cleveland’s commitment to building around its superstar.

The agreement comes after Mitchell delivered another outstanding campaign, leading the Cavaliers to one of the NBA’s best records and solidifying himself as one of the league’s premier guards. His extension removes any speculation about his long-term future and gives Cleveland a clear path forward as it pursues its first NBA championship since 2016.

Mitchell arrived in Cleveland ahead of the 2022-23 season following a blockbuster trade with the Utah Jazz. Since then, he has elevated the Cavaliers into perennial contenders with his elite scoring, playmaking, and leadership.

Last season, Mitchell averaged 26.3 points, 5.0 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 46.5% from the field and 37.8% from three-point range. His performance earned him All-NBA Second Team honors and further strengthened his reputation as one of basketball’s elite two-way guards.

After leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference Finals, Mitchell became eligible to sign an extension on Monday and wasted little time doing so.

Notably, the All-NBA guard left significant money on the table by agreeing to the extension now. Mitchell could have waited until the summer of 2027 to sign a new deal that would have included a fifth season worth approximately $80 million more. Instead, he chose to commit early to Cleveland, underscoring both his confidence in the organization and his desire to continue pursuing a championship with the franchise.

The agreement also marks Mitchell’s second contract extension since being acquired by Cleveland in 2022, further solidifying the relationship between the six-time All-Star and the Cavaliers. At a time when star players often keep their long-term futures uncertain, Mitchell’s decision sends a powerful message about his belief in the direction of the franchise.

For Cleveland, the extension is about more than securing one of the NBA’s premier guards—it provides stability for a championship core that includes Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Jarrett Allen. With Mitchell committed for the foreseeable future, the Cavaliers can continue focusing on building a roster capable of competing for the franchise’s second NBA title.
