Norfolk State opened the 2026 football season with a statement.
The Spartans overwhelmed Winston-Salem State from start to finish Saturday night, cruising to a 56-0 victory in their season opener behind a dominant offensive performance and a suffocating defensive effort.
The victory gave head coach Michael Vick an emphatic start to his second season at the helm and marked Norfolk State’s first shutout since 2019. The Spartans also recorded their first 50-point performance since 2021.
Norfolk State wasted little time establishing control.
Quarterback Deljay Bailey helped spark the Spartans’ offensive attack, completing 13 of 20 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns while adding 56 rushing yards and another score on the ground.
Running back Jalyn Daniels provided a strong presence in the rushing attack, finishing with 104 yards and a touchdown.
Norfolk State scored 21 points in the first half before completely pulling away after halftime, adding 35 more points over the final two quarters.
The Spartans finished the night with 457 total yards, including an impressive 306 rushing yards.
Spartans Dominate on Both Sides
While Norfolk State’s offense consistently moved the football, its defense made sure Winston-Salem State never had an opportunity to get back into the game.
The Spartans held the Rams to just 106 total yards, including only 18 rushing yards.
Winston-Salem State never reached the red zone and struggled to generate any consistent offensive momentum throughout the night.
Norfolk State also forced three turnovers as the Spartans’ defense delivered a complete performance in the shutout.
Scoring Recap
Norfolk State opened the scoring in the first quarter and continued to pile on points throughout the game.
The Spartans carried a 21-0 advantage into halftime, then exploded for 35 points in the second half to turn the game into a rout.
Bailey accounted for four touchdowns, throwing three touchdown passes and adding a rushing score. Elyjah Mitchell was one of his primary targets, hauling in five receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns.
Daniels added his own touchdown on the ground as Norfolk State’s rushing attack continued to wear down the Rams.
By the final whistle, the Spartans had produced their largest offensive performance of the night while keeping Winston-Salem State off the scoreboard.
A Statement to Open the Season
For Vick and Norfolk State, the 56-0 victory was about more than simply starting the season with a win.
The Spartans dominated in every phase of the game, producing more than 450 yards of offense while holding their opponent to just 106 yards.
It was the type of performance that immediately puts Norfolk State on notice as the 2026 season gets underway.
The Spartans will look to carry that momentum into next week when they face Old Dominion on Sept. 5.
