The GOAT debate, as synthetic and exhausting as it is, may never end, but Ric Bucher believes part of the reason is that Michael Jordan and LeBron James approached greatness in fundamentally different ways.
Bucher described Jordan’s dominance as “visceral” while characterizing LeBron’s as “analytical.”
Jordan’s mentality was built around believing he needed to impose his will on the game.
LeBron’s approach has often involved maximizing every possible advantage — primarily through hand picking teammates and roster construction to tip the scales in his favor.
In other words:
Jordan: “I need to be the difference.”
LeBron: “What does it take for me to win?”
It highlights just how different their paths to becoming two of the most accomplished players in NBA history have been.
And that brings us to the debate…
WHO’S RIGHT?
Is greatness about believing you are the solution?
Or is greatness about doing what you can to minimize the possibility of losing?
