As has been the case so many times this season the Albany State defense brought another offense to a grinding halt.
The victim this week was the Savannah State offense.
In what was seen as a battle of SIAC Eastern division, Albany State showed who is the true beast in the East with a dominant 30-0 shellacking of Savannah State.
The Golden Rams defense was lights out , smothering the Tigers offense to a mere 59 yards of total offense, while one again it was the passing game that got it done with ASU quarterback Dionte Bonneau going for 250 yards and two scores.
For most of the first quarter, both defenses stood strong in staving off the opposing offense until late in the quarter when Albany State was finally breakthrough putting together a 10 play 42 yard drive that ended in a 37 yard Gabriel Ballinas field goal to put the Golden Rams up 3-0.
Albany State got their next score after their defense forced a Savannah State 3-and-out on their first drive the second quarter. The Rams did not get in the end zone, but Ballinas’ second field quad of the day, this one from 40 yards out ,put ASU up 6-0. The Golden Rams defense forced another Tigers 3-and-out on their very next drive and the Albany State offense took advantage of good field position, getting in the end zone just five plays later when Kam Ward took it in from 3 yards out, putting the score at 13-0 with the successful PAT.
Following yet another futile drive by the Savannah State, which would be a recurring theme this day, the Rams would pash their advantage to 16-0 with Ballinas’ third field goal of the day , this one from 23-yards out.
Two-thirds of the way through the third quarter a 50-yard touchdown pass from Dionte Bonneau to Javon Wooten put the Tigers in a 23-0 hole.
Bonneau’s second touchdown pass of the day, a 21-yarder to Rashad Jordan would, thankfully for Savannah State, cease the bleeding at 30-0.
Savannah State will have only but a few days to lick their ram-shaped wounds from a loss that not only snaps the Tigers nine-game conference winning streak but also gives SSU head coach Sean Quinn’s first SIAC loss since he assumed the helm back in 2019. Saturday they head to Fort Valley, GA to take on the Wildcats of Fort Valley State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2pm EST.
For Albany State, they remain undefeated in the SIAC, and they will hit the road next week, heading to Atlanta to take on the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College.
