Albany State kicked off the 2022 season by getting a home win over Mississippi College 28-14.
The Choctaws got off to a fast start, taking a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest on a drive tha featured a 50-yard run from Marcus Williams that set up a 1-yard scoring run from QB DeAnte Smith-Moore. The 50-yard scamper from Williams was over 12 times the 4-yard output he churned out in last season’s meeting with the Golden Rams.
Albany State answered back when quarterback Dionte Bonneau connected with Joe Shorter on a 40-yard touchdown strike that to square the game at seven.
Mississippi College reclaimed the lead later in the quarter when DeAnte Smith-Moore found Sam Wilder on a 29-yard scoring pass to put the Choctaws back out in front 14-7.
Mississippi College would hold that lead until the later stages of the second quarter, when Rashad Jordan’s 40-yard punt return started the Golden Rams’ offense at Choctaws’ 35-yard line. Four plays later Kam Ward’s 8-yard run, and subsequent extra point would tie the game at 14.
The two teams played to a stalemate in the third quarter, with neither team scoring, with the only potential score was a missed 31-yard field goal attempt off the foot of Eli Mashburn.
Albany State took the lead in the fourth quarter with an 8 play, 80 yard drive that ended with a 6-yard run from Marcuis Fulks, who ended up with 116 yards on 16 carries, into the endzone that put the Golden Rams up 21-14.
In the second half, the Golden Rams seemed to have a better handle on the Choctaws triple option attack, limiting them to 123 yards of total offense in the second half and forcing two turnovers. The first of those aforementioned turnovers was a pick-six of Smith-Moore by Jaree Turner who took it 52 yards a la casa to put Albany State up by two touchdowns, 28-14, where the score would remain.
Next up for the Golden Rams is a trip to Tallahassee and Bragg Memorial Stadium to take on Florida A&M. Kickoff is scheduled for 6pm EST.
