Albany State powers late to 34-10 win over Morehouse

The Albany State Golden Rams overcame a one point halftime deficit and then pulled away late in their 34-10 victory over the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers.

Defense was the story of the first half for both ball clubs as the respective units for the Rams and Tigers gave up a combined 107 yards of total offense. Each time mustered 5 rushing yards in the first half. Morehouse could only generate 36 yards over the course of the 33 offensive plays they ran. Albany State was not much better, their offense generating only 71 yards with the 25 offensive snaps they had in first half. The defenses also got after the opposing quarterback, combining for 13 , Morehouse having 7 and Albany State registering 6, sacks in the opening half.

The defense even accounted for the initial first down for their respective teams but also for the lone touchdown of the first half. Albany State’s would come on a Jsylin Bpyd 57 yard interception return and Morehouse’s on a 59 yard pick-six from Cameron Miles. Morehouse would also tally a field goal to give this defensive battle a 10-9 score headed into halftime.

Albany State would regain the lead more than 10 minutes into the third quarter as they culminated a 10-play, 66-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chancellor Johnson to Quavery Simmons. The PAT brought the score to 16-10 in favor of the Rams.

In the fourth quarter Albany State would put the game away. Kelan Fraise’s 73-yard touchdown scamper and ensuing two-point conversion put Albany State up 24-10. On Morehouse’s next possession, the ASU defense forced a fumble and 25 seconds later, McKinley Habersham broke lose for a 49-yard touchdown run. After the PAT, the score was now 31-10 in favor of Albany State. The fumbleitis continued for the Maroon Tigers on their next possession, the Rams recovered and capitalized with a Gabriel Ballinas 39-yard field goal to close out the scoring at 34-10 with 2:18 to go in the game.

Albany State will head to Atlanta next week to take on the Clark-Atlanta Panthers for CAU’s Homecoming. Kickoff for the game is set for 2:00 P.M. EST and will be broadcast on ESPN3. Morehouse will host Benedict College next week for their Homecoming. Kickoff time is also 2:oo P.M. EST.
