Bowie State defeats Lincoln, 41-24

BOWIE, Md. – It was a collective team effort for the Bowie State football team as the Bulldogs topped Lincoln (PA), 41-24 for its season finale and senior day contest Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium. Prior to kickoff, Bowie State recognized 10 football seniors including Dion Golatt, Jr., Kharee LockleyQuinton BoboQuindonte BoboEllison JordanJoshua PryorMorgan ScrogginsMark MurphyTyron Ferguson and Kareem Prass). 

The Bulldogs never trailed in the contest, combining for 454 yards of total offense that featured 233 through the air and 221 on the ground to go along with 28 first downs. Lincoln (PA) (2-7, 1-6 CIAA, 0-5 North) tallied 364-yards of total offense (249 rushing, 115 passing) and 17 first downs.

Bowie State opened the tilt with the game’s first score on the afternoon when Golatt, Jr. found Scroggins for a 12-yard reception TD. The Lions used a 13-play drive for 81-yards to respond to the Bulldogs score with a two-yard scamper from Malach Langley at the 6:48 mark that tied the game at 7-all.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored 13 unanswered points highlighted by a 21-yard reception TD for redshirt junior Keshane Hinckley (Laurel, MD) at the 12:16 mark and then a 28-yard rushing touchdown for redshirt sophomore Kevon Campbell (Washington, D.C.) at the 2:42 mark. Bowie State would hold a 20-7 lead over the Lions at halftime.

Lincoln (PA) picked off Golatt, Jr.’s pass in the third quarter for a 19-yard score with 13:15 on the clock but Bowie State bounced back thanks to a three play, 25-yard drive capped by a 16-yard rushing TD for redshirt sophomore Corey Johnson(Upper Marlboro, MD) with 5:16 remaining. Holding a 27-14 lead, BSU held the Lions to a fourth down thanks to a sack from redshirt sophomore Shawan Lewis (Baltimore, MD) but after a timeout, LUPA nailed a 38-yard field goal that pulled the Lions within 10 (27-17) heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Bowie State orchestrated a nine-play, 65-yard performance and a nine-yard reception TD for Hinckley – his second of the day. Although the Lions scored again on a two-yard rush for Amir Gerald (12:41) to cut the Bulldogs lead to 10 (34-24), Golatt, Jr. directed the charge after a pair of first downs that led to his biggest target in redshirt sophomore Jordan Griffin (Hyattsville, MD) who plowed through multiple defenders for his first touchdown of the season that was 28-yards.

For the remaining 8:17, Bowie State’s defense called the shots. Of the Lions three possessions during that time span, the Bulldogs forced a fumble and committed LUPA to go three and out twice for the rest of their offensive possessions.

Saturday’s win concludes the Bulldogs 2022 season at 6-4 overall, 5-3 in the CIAA and 3-2 in the North Division. Golatt, Jr. completed 20-of-37 passes for 233 yards and four TDs while Johnson led the rushing unit with 15 carries, 80-yards and a score. Hinckley tallied six catches for 79-yards and two TDs while redshirt sophomore Justin Zavala (Bowie, MD) connected 5-of-6 field point after attempts.

Pryor led the Bulldogs defense with seven tackles, two tackle for losses, a pair of hurries and a breakup while redshirt sophomore Keith Williams (Baltimore, MD), junior Hasan Mosely (Washington, D.C.) and redshirt sophomore Kennypride Toh (Silver Spring, MD) all recorded six tackles apiece.

Bowie State finishes the 2022 season 6-4 overall, 5-3 in the CIAA and 3-2 in the Northern Division under head coach Kyle Jackson in his first season.
