ETTRICK, Va. — Virginia State University is dealing with a developing crisis after five people were wounded in a shooting near campus residence halls early Saturday morning.
According to authorities, officers responded around 1:28 a.m. Saturday, August 15, to the area of the university’s Quad Annexes, where they found five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. All five victims were transported to area hospitals.
One victim, who was initially reported to have life-threatening injuries, was later upgraded to critical condition. The other four victims suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Virginia State University confirmed that at least one of the victims is a VSU student. That student was among those who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital. The identities of the victims have not been released.
Campus Lockdown Lifted
Following the shooting, Virginia State University was placed under lockdown as law enforcement searched the area and investigated what happened.
The lockdown has since been lifted. University officials said authorities do not believe there is an immediate threat to the campus community, although a significant law-enforcement presence remains on campus as the investigation continues.
Officials say multiple suspects are believed to have been involved. No arrests had been announced as of the latest reports.
The Chesterfield County Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Shooting Comes Just Before Fall Semester
The shooting comes at a particularly difficult time for the Virginia State community. The university had just welcomed incoming students through its New Trojans Experience, with classes scheduled to resume Monday, August 17.
Virginia State University, founded in 1882, is one of the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities and has a student population of roughly 5,700.
The university acknowledged the concern the shooting has caused among students, parents, alumni and the broader VSU community, emphasizing that the safety and well-being of its students remain its highest priority.
