Jacksonville Jaguars hire Urban Meyer as head coach

From Joseph Zucker of B/R: Urban Meyer is returning to the coaching ranks, but it won’t be at the college level.  On Thursday, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced they hired Meyer. It will be the 56-year-old’s first time as an NFL head coach: Meyer most recently coached at Ohio State, compiling an 83-9 record in seven years at the school. The Buckeyes were national champions in 2014 and claimed the Big Ten title on three occasions under his watch. Alabama WR DeVonta Smith wins Heisman

From Alex Scarborough of ESPN: The nearly three-decade drought of wide receivers failing to win the Heisman Trophy ended when Alabama senior DeVonta Smith was presented the award during a virtual ceremony on Tuesday night. Chargers run Anthony Lynn after four seasons

From Grant Gordon of nfl.com: In 2020 — and prior — the Los Angeles Chargers have had a heartbreaking habit of losing close games. The Chargers and coach Anthony Lynn had a strong finish to the 2020 season, but it wasn’t enough for Lynn to remain with the Bolts, as he was fired on Monday. Past the midway point of his fourth season with the Chargers, Lynn and the Chargers had a 3-8 record following a 45-0 loss to the Patriots and it seemed to be past the point of…

Texas firing Tom Herman underscores hypocrisy of College Football Inc.

Texas firing Tom Herman is the latest example that the football beast must be fed ever-increasing amounts, even when college athletics is navigating a financial crisis. By Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated: A long time ago, way back in mid-December 2020, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte issued a statement saying that Tom Herman is the coach of the Longhorns football program. As shows of support go, this was the bare minimum. Now we know why. What the statement didn’t say is that Herman would remain the coach of the Longhorns football…

Postgame fight provides ugly end to the Armed Forces

from B/R: Tulsa and Mississippi State did not wish each other a happy New Year at the conclusion of the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, which the Bulldogs won 28-26. Instead, a massive brawl broke out between the two teams: This is never what you want to see at the end of a game, especially when it’s the final note of a team’s season. With 13 seconds left, Williams took an unnecessary gamble, leaving rookie cornerback Lamar Jackson in man-to-man coverage against the speedy Henry Ruggs III, who burned him for a 46-yard touchdown. The play call was unprecedented in recent NFL history. According to research by ESPN Stats & Information,…
