RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 29) – The Lowe’s Corporation and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) will recognize basketball student-athletes Kelsee Arnold (Sr./Fayetteville, GA) and Tyre Gathright (Sr./Wilmington, NC) of Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) during the men’s and women’s doubleheader against Livingstone College on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Emery Gymnasium.
Both Arnold and Gathright are SAU nominees for the Lowe’s CIAA Senior CLASS Award, given to a male and female basketball senior who excel in the areas of the four C’s – Classroom, Character, Community and Competition. The winners will be announced and will each receive a trophy at the CIAA Basketball Tournament on March 2 in Charlotte, N.C.
On Wednesday, Lowe’s Assistant Store Manager Malcom Smith will present both SAU student-athletes with special souvenirs for being chosen nominees for the Lowe’s CIAA Senior Class Award. The presentation will take place on the basketball court after the women’s game and before the men’s contest. The women’s contest starts at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s matchup begins at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The men’s and women’s winners will be determined through a voting system that includes fans, CIAA basketball media members and CIAA coaches. Fan balloting has started and concludes Feb. 20 at LowesCIAASCA.com.
Arnold, a guard on the Lady Falcons’ basketball team, is one of the top students at Saint Augustine’s University with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average. The Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) has honored Arnold twice (2018, 2017) with an Academic Achievement Award for having a GPA higher than a 3.5. Kelsee was also a member of the Lady Falcons’ basketball squad that won the 2016-17 CIAA Women’s Basketball Highest Team GPA Award.
Gathright, a guard on the SAU men’s basketball team, is an exceptional basketball player and an exceptional collegiate student. He maintains a 3.24 cumulative grade point average in the classroom and is the Falcons’ leading scorer on the basketball court with an 18.6 average. The Falcons’ senior was named to the All-CIAA men’s basketball team last season and was selected to the Preseason All-CIAA men’s basketball squad this season. Academically, Gathright is on the Dean’s List and the Scholar-Athlete List at Saint Augustine’s University for having a 3.0 GPA or higher.
