NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 27, 2022 – Senior guard Sam Sessoms of Coppin State has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the league announced today. Howard University freshman forward Shy Odom was named Rookie of the Week, and junior forward Justin Steers of Coppin Statewas announced as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Sam Sessoms (6-0, r-Sr., G, Philadelphia, Pa.)
Sessoms posted a game-high 28 points in the Eagles’ double overtime 107-100 win over JMU and poured in 17 points against George Mason last week. In the two games, Sessoms averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and three steals per game.
Shy Odom (6-6, Fr., F, Chestnut Hill, Mass.)
Odom recorded a team-high 14 points and six rebounds in the 63-62 win over Mount St. Mary’s. He went 6-for-9 from the field and added two assists and one steal in 30 minutes.
Justin Steers (6-7, Jr., F, Philadelphia, Pa.)
Steers tallied eight blocks, seven rebounds and four steals in two games last week. He blocked a career-high five shots in the double overtime win over JMU. Steers blocked another three shots against Goerge Mason.
Other Top Performers
Elijah Hawkins (Howard) finished with 13 points, six assists and a game-high three steals in the win over Mount St. Mary’s.
Nate Pollard, Jr. (Maryland Eastern Shore)had 10 rebounds, two steals and a block in the win over Temple.
Da’Shawn Phillip (Maryland Eastern Shore) scored a game-high 18 points in the road win at Temple.
Malik Miller (Morgan State) paced the Bears scoring 14 of his team-high 23 points in the first half and finished with four rebounds and four assists in 35 minutes at No. 5 ranked Arizona.
Joe Bryant, Jr. (Norfolk State) scored 25 points at Nevada, shooting 9-of-14 from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
George Beale (Norfolk State) scored six points on 3-of-7 shooting from the floor and grabbed three boards at Nevada.
Dan Oladapo (North Carolina Central) posted 21 points, nine boards and two steals in a victory over The Citadel.
Justin Wright (North Carolina Central)tallied a game-high 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field to lift NCCU to a non-conference win over The Citadel.
