It took overtime to do it but the Florida A&M women’s basketball team got by Alcorn State 60-58 Monday night at the Whitney Complex in Lorman, MS.
FAMU jumped out to an 18-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, but over the next two periods, the Braves outscored the Rattlers 18-8 and 15-7 to take a 38-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The last period was a nip-and-tuck affair, with the largest lead being six by the Rattlers twice, on an Anisja Blair’s three-pointer that put FAMU up 44-38 at the 7:27 mark, and with 2:20 left in the contest on a pair of Tia Bradshaw free throws.
A miss by Anisja Harris on the back end of the pair throws with :17 to go left the door open for Alcorn, as the score was 52-49. The Braves took advantage via an Tyginae Wright three-pointer with :02 left tied the game at 52 and to overtime we went.
In the extra session, Alcorn took the lead when Wright knocked down another three to put the Braves up 55-52. FAMU tired the score at 55 on a Tia Bradshaw free throw with 1:55 remaining. A layup from Harris put the Rattlers up 57-55 and they would build the lead to four on a short jumper from Staysha Allen.
A three pointer form Kailyn Watkins with :05 left kept hope alive for Alcorn at 59-58. Incredibly, FAMU left the door open again at 60-58 with a missed free throw, but Larae Rascoe’s game winning three-point attempt was no good, giving FAMU the hard-fouhg 60-58 win.
Up next for FAMU is Alabama State this Saturday, with a 2pm tip off time.
