Fisk women’s hoops spanks Oakwood 71-52 in GCAC Tournament First Round

The Fisk University Women’s basketball team had a memorable afternoon Thursday, February 23rd, when they crushed Oakwood University 71-52 in the first round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championships.

Senior and GCAC Player of the Year Maya Buckhanon (SR/Talladega, AL) led the way with 28 points and 11 rebounds for the #2 Fisk squad. Senior Mya Allen (SR/Kansas City, KS,) added an impressive 14 rebounds, and Sophomore Zipporah Davis (JR/Memphis, TN.) rounded out the scoring with 11 points.

The Fisk women’s team was in control of the game from the start and held a commanding lead at halftime, 36-20. They maintained their momentum in the second half and never looked back, outscoring Oakwood 35-32 to secure the victory.

The win marks the first victory in the tournament for Fisk, and they will now face the winner of #3 Philander Smith College and #6 Tougaloo College on Friday, February 25th at 12pm.
