GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University volleyball team returned to Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Sunday afternoon and rolled past Prairie View A&M, 3-0, at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Grambling State, which has yet to drop a set in conference play, took the opening set, 25-23. The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 14-3 advantage in the second, before picking the 25-16 victory. GSU completed the conference sweep with a 25-16 win in the third set.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- Grambling State (6-7 overall, 3-0 SWAC) raced out to a 7-2 advantage, forcing PVAMU to call a timeout
- The Panthers (3-15, 1-1) used a 6-1 run to cut the deficit to 8-7
- A solo block by Haley Gomezgave the Lady Tigers an 11-9 lead
- Prairie View A&M refused to go away quietly, tying the set at 12
- Grambling State called a timeout with the set tied at 16
- The Panthers their first lead of the day, 19-18, off a kill by Skyline Wynn
- Back came Grambling State, tying the set at 20 off a kill by Gomez
- The Lady Tigers held off the late PVAMU charge for a 25-23 win
Second Set
- The Lady Tigers quickly jumped out to an 8-2 advantage, forcing the Panthers to call a timeout
- GSU extended the lead to 11-2 after a kill by Maggie Plush
- The Panthers closed the gap to 15-8, but a kill by Plush gave GSU a 16-8 lead
- PVAMU continued to chip away at the deficit, closing the margin the 21-14
- However, Grambling State proved to be too much in a 25-16 victory
Third Set
- Grambling State opened the frame with a 6-3 lead
- However, Prairie View A&M rallied, tying the set at 6, before an attacking error by Taylor Roberts gave GSU a 7-6 advantage
- An attacking error on Kai Williams tied the set at 9
- The Lady Tigers responded with a 6-1 run to grab a 15-10 lead
- Prairie View A&M fell behind 21-13 and closed the gap to 21-16
- The Panthers never got any closer as Grambling State closed out the match, 25-16
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State finished with 37 kills in 102 total attacks, with 16 errors (hitting .206)
- The Lady Tigers recorded 41 digs, 33 assists, 10.0 total team blocks and four service aces
- Jayden James led the way offensively with 11 kills and five digs
- Maggie Plush added six kills in nine total attacks (hitting .556), while Hillary English and Destiny Thomas each recorded five kills
- Ana Calderon dished out 18 assists
- Nyah Ellis paced the defense with 10 digs
- Haley Gomez tallied four block solos and three block assists
- Prairie View A&M finished with 30 kills in 98 total attacks, with 24 errors
- The Panthers registered 39 digs, 28 assists, 2.0 total team blocks and two service aces
- Kylee Owens recorded 11 kills and nine digs
- Jakarta Hope tallied 15 assists
- Skyla Child posted a team-high 10 digs
NEWS AND NOTES
- Grambling State hasn’t started 3-0 in conference play since the 2009 season when the Lady Tigers finished the season 20-13 overall and 8-0 in SWAC play
- The Lady Tigers were 3-0 against conference opponents Texas Southern (3-2), Alcorn State (3-0) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-2) in 2011, but the Alcorn State did not count in the conference standings due to divisional play
