International Hoops News: Germany to retire Dirk Nowitski’s national jersey

The German basketball federation announced they will retire Dirk Nowitski’s no.14 national team jersey.

This marks the first time a national federation will retire a jersey, something that was impermissible under the old FIBA rules.

“I felt honored above all when this idea was presented to me by the German federation. It was a nice surprise and I’m already excited about what awaits me in Cologne. As an ambassador of FIBA EuroBasket, I’m looking forward to exciting games with great teams and hope that the fans in Cologne and Berlin will ensure full arenas and a great atmosphere.”

German federation president Ingo Weiss had this to say :

“If anyone deserves it, it’s Dirk. He has always been willing to play for Germany, putting in incredible performances in 153 international games for the men.”

Those 153 international appearances included leading the team to bronze in the 200 FIBA World Cup and the silver medal in 2005 EuroBasket.

The jersey retirement will take place on September 1 before the Germany-France game in Cologne.
