Jackson State hangs on to best Delta State 24-17 in W.C. Gorden Classic

After building a 17-0 lead on Delta State in the W.C. Gorden Classic The Jackson State Tigers looked poised to cruise to a comfortable victory , however the Statesmen battled back to make it a game that the Tigers would hang on to win, 24-17.

Jackson State got the scoring started early with a 40-yard field goal from Glenn Misiak that concluded an 8 play, 33-yard drive to take a 3-0 lead. The lead would be extended to 10-0 with 52 seconds remaining in the period when Shadeur Sanders connected with Keith Corbin III on an 11-yard touchdown toss. Offensively speaking, things would be pretty tame in the second stanza until Sanders would throw his second touchdown pass of the afternoon, again finding Corbin III( who had a career day hauling in eight passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns ) on a 13-yard score, giving the Tigers of Jackson a 17-0 lead that they would take into the half.

The fireworks in the third quarter would not start until 4:32 left in the quarter when Delta State finally got into the scoring column via a 35-yard strike from DSU QB Connor Mantelli to Dohnte Meyers to make the score 17-7. Jackson State responded with an 8 play, 73 yard drive that ended in Sanders’ third touchdown pass of the day, this one of the six-yard variety, to Warren Newman. The touchdown reception was one of his career high 11 catches, which bested his previous high of 10 that he set in the previous week.

A 64-yard scamper from Deion Damper on Delta State next offensive snap would draw the Statesmen to within ten at 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter. A 41-yard field goal from Connor Mantelli early in the fourth would draw DSU to within seven at 24-17, which would prove to be the final mark of the contest.

Shadeur Sanders was named the W.C. Golden Classic offensive MVP, while Antwan Owens would take home the defensive MVP.

The Tigers of Jackson return to SWAC play in two weeks when they will head to Huntsville, AL to take on the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 pm CST.
