Jr. Clay exploded for 40 points in a virtuoso performance as Tennessee State defeated Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 100-85.

The grad transfer connected on 8 of his 9 field goal attempts, including 3 of his four attempts from downtown in scoring 26 points in the first half. However TSU as a team was locked in offensively, shooting 63.3% ( 19-30) from the floor and 54.5% ( 6-11) from three. This hot shooting , coupled with the frigid 32% shooting of the Cougars, enabled the Tigers to build a 57-37 halftime lead.

Althought the Cougars outscored the Tigers in the second half, 48-43, it nowhwew near enough to make up the first half deficit . Clay tacked on another 14 points in the and the Tigers shot 55.2% in the second half, in cruising to a comfortable 100-85 win.

In additon to Clay’s exploits, Marcus Fitzgerald Jr turned in a solid performance with 18 points , 6 rebounds and 3 assists on 5-8 FG. Dedric Boyd chipped in 13 points and 2 rebounds.

The win lifts Tennessee State to 17-12 overall but more importantly 9-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference, which ties the Tigers for third with Tennessee Tech. Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Martin, Tennessee to take on the Skyhawks of UT Martin. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM CST.
