SIAC News: Tuskegee Women’s Basketball getting ready for SIAC/Gulf South Crossover

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Head Coach Trelanne Powell and her program will officially open their 2022-23 regular season schedule on Friday, as they compete in the Gulf South-SIAC Crossover over the weekend, held in Cleveland, Miss.

The Golden Tigers will battle a pair of non-conference opponents in host school Delta State on Friday evening, followed by a matchup with Mississippi College on Saturday afternoon, both in the Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Delta State went 14-13 last season, falling to the top seed Union in the second round of the GSC Basketball Tournament. Meanwhile Mississippi College is coming off a 15-13 season last year.

GAME NOTES

  • Tuskegee was picked to finish atop the SIAC West inthe SIACin the Preseason polls, voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
  • The Golden Tigers swept the preseason individual awards for the second straight year, with reigning Player of the Year Ashiala Jackson(Merrillville, Ind.) and reigning Defensive Player of the Year JuToreyia Willis (Chattanooga, Tenn.).
  • Coach Powell and her program will look to continue their current streak of success, as they return ten players from last year’s program.
  • The program has also welcomed six newcomers this season, with transfers in Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim(Grand Prairie, Texas), Mikayla Malik(Houston, Texas), Ashley Primas(Detroit, Mich.), and Da’Nasia Shaw (Fort Valley, Ga.). They also added a pair of freshmen in Kei’lley Brown(Birmingham, Ala.) and Kaitlyn Robinson (Atlanta, Ga.).
