Southern hangs on to defeat Alcorn, 21-17

BATON ROUGE, LA —  Southern University’s football team entered into a four quarter heavy weight fight with the Alcorn State University Braves to take over the first place spot in the SWAC West, where the Jaguars outlasted the Braves 21-17 at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Freshman running back Karl Ligon led the Jags rushing attack with 92-yards and a score. August Pitre III had a big night with four catches for 127-yards and score. Besean McCray went 12 of 19 on the night for 199 yards and throwing 2 touchdowns.

The Jaguars defense continue to show traits of the legendary Dog Day D shutting down the Braves rushing attack that has been dominant this season. Jordan Carter comes up huge for the Jags stopping Jarveon Howard behind the line of scrimmage to set up the fourth down play that sealed the game for the Jags. Corione Harris led the Jaguar defense with 10 tackles and Jalan Campbell finished the night with eight tackles and one tackle for loss. 
Southern will host the University of Virginia Lynchburg for homecoming on Saturday, October 22nd inside A.W. Mumford Stadium & Pete Richardson Field Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast on Jaguar Sports Network.
