Eddie Reese had 21 big points for the Southern Jaguars but it was his last point that proved to be the most critical. He sank the game-winning free throw with one second to go in the game, as the Jaguars defeated Jackson State 62-60 in the quarterfinals of the SWAC basketball conference tournament.
A 12-0 was culminated by Torrey Mayo’s layup ; Jared Sam’s jumper at 4:03 knotted the contest at 54. Jackson State responded with a bucket from Lemmie Howard which put them up 56-54. A pair of free throws each from Maurice Rivers and Julian Daughtry extended the Tiger lead to 60-56.
Jared Sam tied the game at 60 when he canned a jumper off an offensive rebound. Following that Reese was fouled and sank two-of-three free throws to left Southern to victory.
Southern will now take on #1 seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff Friday at 2:30 in the semifinals.
