Sophie Cunningham Says A’ja Wilson Is the WNBA’s LeBron James — Claims There’s a Double Standard

Sophie Cunningham just added another layer to the A’ja Wilson controversy.

Following the confrontation between Wilson and a fan during the WNBA playoffs, Cunningham suggested that Wilson receives the same type of star treatment that LeBron James has received throughout his NBA career.

And she believes that treatment played a role in Wilson avoiding a suspension.

“She’s like the LeBron James of our league and so of course they’re not going to suspend her,” Cunningham said.

“I definitely think there’s a double standard.”

But Cunningham’s comments came with an interesting twist.

She also admitted that she wanted Wilson on the court.

“We wanted her to play, I think that makes for good basketball.”

WHAT HAPPENED?

Wilson was involved in a confrontation with a fan after a playoff game, with the incident centered around a pointing gesture between Wilson and the spectator.

Wilson was assessed a technical foul, but the league did not issue an additional suspension.

That decision allowed Wilson to remain available for the Aces’ next game.

And Cunningham believes the decision illustrates how the league handles its biggest stars.

THE LEBRON COMPARISON

Calling Wilson the “LeBron James of our league” is significant.

LeBron has spent much of his career as the NBA’s biggest superstar, while Wilson has established herself as one of the WNBA’s most recognizable and accomplished players.

So Cunningham’s comparison can be interpreted in two different ways.

On one hand, it’s a massive compliment.

On the other, Cunningham is suggesting that being the league’s biggest star can come with a different set of consequences.

That’s where the double-standard conversation comes in.

BUT HERE’S THE PART THAT MAKES THIS INTERESTING

Cunningham wasn’t exactly campaigning for Wilson to be suspended. She acknowledged that having Wilson available makes the basketball better.

That creates a fascinating contradiction:

You can believe a player is receiving preferential treatment while simultaneously being happy that player is on the court.

And that’s essentially where this debate gets interesting.

WHO’S RIGHT?

There are really two questions here.

1️⃣ Did A’ja Wilson deserve additional punishment?

2️⃣ Does the WNBA treat its biggest stars differently from everyone else?

Those aren’t necessarily the same question.

The league’s decision can be debated without automatically proving that Wilson received special treatment.

But Cunningham’s comments have certainly opened the door for the conversation.

And considering Wilson’s importance to the Aces, the WNBA and women’s basketball as a whole, the debate isn’t going away anytime soon.

WHO’S RIGHT?

Sophie Cunningham:
“There’s a double standard.”

The other side:
The league simply determined that the incident didn’t warrant a suspension.

Now it’s your turn.

🗣️ WHO’S RIGHT?

A. Sophie Cunningham — There IS a double standard.

B. The WNBA — A’ja didn’t deserve a suspension.

C. Both — A’ja should play, but the league needs consistency.
