BATON ROUGE, LA — Southern University football team honored 19 seniors on Saturday afternoon. The Jags defeated Mississippi Valley 27-7 to complete a perfect 5-0 record at home in front of 17,776 fans inside a chilly A. W. Mumford Stadium.

Despite starting off slow on the offensive side of the ball, the Jags picked up pace late in the first quarter and never looked back scoring 27 straight points before Valley scored their lone touchdown with 6:58 left in the third quarter.

Southern played three quarterbacks on the day, Besean McCray started the contest going 2-of-2 for 67 yards and a touchdown. Glendon McDaniel played the second and third quarter going 11-of-16 for 113 yard and two touchdowns, along with a 10-yard scamper around the right side to account for three score on the day. The Jags brought in Harold Blood closed out the game, going 2-of-4 for 60 yards. The Jaguars quarterbacks collectively connected to 11 differents recievers on the night. Karl Ligon electrified the crowd with his ability to make to opposing team miss, finished the game second in rushing behind McDaniel with 54 yards off 14 carries. Tyler Kirkwood had a season high 63 yards off six receptions and a score.  

The Jaguars swarming defense made Mississippi Valley quarterbacks uncomfortable picking up five sacks on the day led by Jalan Campbell with seven tackles including a tackle for a three-yard loss. Kriston Davis finished the day with six tackles. Ckelby Givens and Derrick Williams finished with five tackles each. Williams added two pass break ups adn a QB hurry. Givens added a force fumble, 1.5 sacks and two tackles for a eight-yard loss. 

UP NEXTSouthern will travel to New Orleans, LA to take on the Grambling State Tigers in the 49th Annual Bayou Classic inside the Ceasars Superdome.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on NBC.
