South African officials confiscate fake sneakers in raid

Several people were arrested in a raid on foreign-owned shops that were selling counterfeit sneakers. On May 21 a multi-agency operation between the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation ( or as they are colloquially known, the “Hawks” ), Polokwane Tatical Response Team (TRT), Musina Police and custom officials from the Beit Bridge border post raided four shops that were selling the illegal goods. Stupid Things People Do For Sneakers: South African man caught with more than $50k in counterfeit sneakers

Police in KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal South African province, said they apprehended a man who was transporting thousands of dollars worth of counterfeit sneakers. Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbeke said an intelligence operation was conducted June 9 that observed a suspicious bakkie (truck) travelling on the R69 Vryheid/Hlobane Road near the Shona Settlement. Police intercepted the vehicle and in the course of the search, found several bales of counterfeit sneakers , worth 700,000 South African Rand ( $50,963.45 USD) in the rear of the truck.
