Tennessee State football announces team captains

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State football program and head football coach Eddie George announced the 2022 team captains on Thursday afternoon. Leading the Tigers will be Gleson SprewellDavoan HawkinsJJ Holloman, and Kaleb Mosley. The captains were selected by the Tiger players.

Sprewell is a grad transfer from the University of Houston. The Arizona native played in 33 career games for the Cougars over a span of four seasons. He totaled 115 tackles, seven pass breakups, and six interceptions. He returned one interception for a touchdown in 2018.

Hawkins, a former Kentucky defensive lineman is back for his third season in a TSU uniform. He comes into the year with 61 career tackles and seven sacks. The redshirt senior played in all 11 games last season, and totaled 29 tackles, 16 solo, 13 assists, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and five quarterback hurries. His best game of the season came against Austin Peay (10/2), when he recorded four tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and quarterback hurry.  

Holloman, a redshirt senior from Georgia is entering his first season with the Tigers in 2022. The former Georgia Bulldog and FIU Panther arrives at TSU with 33 career receptions, 533 yards, and six touchdowns. Fan should expect to see Holloman lined up on the outside a lot this season, as his 6-3 frame and power five experience should provide quarterback Draylen Ellis with another strong set of hands to throw the ball to. 

Mosley enters his fifth year as a Tiger in 2022. Last season the Alabama native punted 62 times for 2,548 yards. He recorded 10 punts of 50+ yards and landed 15 punts inside the 20. Mosley has played in 37 career games and has punted 184 times for 7,393 yards, which includes 45 punts inside the 20, while also totaling 131 career kickoffs for 7,241 yards and 36 touchbacks. Mosley was named to the 2022 FCS Punter of the Year Watch List after leading the OVC in punting average (41.7) last year. He was a 2020-2021 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree, and a 2019 Phil Steele All-OVC Second Team selection. 

TSU will open up its season this Saturday, Sept. 3, as they will take on Eastern Washington University at 3:00 p.m. CT/1:00 p.m. PT. You can find more information on Saturday’s season opener and the 2022 TSU football team here.
