Tennessee State Football Places Seven on OVC Preseason Defensive Players to Watch List

The Tennessee State Tigers continue to receive preseason recognition heading into the 2026 football season, with seven players earning spots on the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Defensive Players to Watch list.

Under head coach Reggie Barlow, who enters his second season leading the Tigers, Tennessee State’s defense is expected to be a key factor as the program looks to build momentum in the OVC.

The Tigers were represented across multiple defensive and special teams categories, highlighting the team’s depth and versatility.

Defensive Line

  • Bryce Gray (So.)

As a freshman, Gray appeared in 10 contests for the Tigers last season. He recorded 25 total tackles ( 11 solo, 14 assisted) , 4 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. He may be called upon to take the next step for the Tigers defense this season. 

Linebacker

  • Sammy Taylor (Jr.)

Taylor has seen his participation and production rise every year he has been at TSU. In 2025 he posted career highs in game played (12) , tackles ( 51 total, 31 solo and 20 assisted) , tackles for loss (2) and sacks (1). The Tigers will look for him to take another step forward in 2026. 

Defensive Back

  • Syncere Safeeullah (Jr.)

The Nebraska transfer appeared in 11 games for the Tigers , recording 17 total tackles (12 solo, 5 assisted), 0.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 4 passes defended and 2 forced fumbles. 

Punt Return Specialist

  • Anthony Taylor (So.)

Taylor returned 19 punts, averaging 3.5 yards per return, with a long of 18 yards. 

    Kick return specialist Jaden Jones (So.), Punter Davion Moore and long snapper Steven Nelson were also named to the watch list.

    Tennessee State will look to lean on a defense featuring a mix of experienced veterans and young players ready to make an impact.
