In a game that saw 14 lead changes, The Tennessee State women’s basketball team evened their record at 3-3,getting a 74-72 win over the University of Nebraska Omaha on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers only shot 41.9% from the field including a frigid 21.4% from downtown but were able to mitigate those shooting woes by forcing 27 Mavericks turnovers which they were able to translate into 33 points.

The first half was a tightly contested affair with Omaha briefly enjoying a four-point lead at 16-12 on a jumper from Aaliyah Stanley with 2:45 left to go in the first quarter. Sierra McCullough’s layup ninety seconds later squared the game at 18. For the remainder of the quarter and half the Mavericks stayed in striking distance, reclaiming the lead late in the second quarter, 32-31 on a three-pointer from Stanley; a Gia Adams jumper tied the game at 33 heading into halftime.

The Mavericks shot 56% in the second half, but their endevours for victory were derailed by 14 turnovers and an untimely inability to secure defensive rebounds. Even despite their inability to take care of the basketball, Omaha was able to stay in the contest, even taking a 72-70 lead on Elena Pilakouta’s layup with 0:23 left in the game. The Mavericks were unable to secure the rebound of an Erica Haynes-Overton missed three pointer, as the rebound was claimed by Sierra McCullough, who was fouled by Grace Cave, which sent McCullough to the free throw line. McCullough drained her pair of free throws, tying the game at 72. A subsequent steal by Haynes-Overton would lead to her being fouled and earning a trip to the charity stripe with 0:02 left in the contest. She knocked down the free throws to give the e Tigers a two point lead and the win, at 74-72.

Erica Haynes-Overton led all scorers with 32 points and was one of but two Tigers in double figures, with Gia Adams chipping in 16 points.
