The college football community is mourning the tragic loss of William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett, who died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during the Cardinals’ season opener against Fort Lewis College.
Barnett, a 20-year-old junior majoring in business administration, experienced the medical emergency on the sideline during the first quarter of the Division II matchup in Liberty, Missouri.
The incident came shortly after Barnett scored a touchdown to give William Jewell an early lead. He had carried the ball six times for 30 yards before the game was stopped.
Emergency medical personnel responded immediately and Barnett was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities and the school have not announced a cause of death.
The game was initially suspended before ultimately being canceled following the news of Barnett’s death.
William Jewell released a statement mourning the loss of the junior running back and offered support to his family, teammates, coaches, students and the broader Cardinal community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss,” the school said.
Barnett was a standout at Liberty North High School, helping lead the Eagles to a state championship during his senior season. He also earned Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors for the 2025-26 academic year.

A vigil was held Saturday night on the William Jewell campus in Barnett’s honor.
The Fort Lewis College community also expressed its condolences to Barnett’s family, friends, teammates and everyone affected by the tragedy.
