ETTRICK, Va. — A 19-year-old man has been arrested after a shooting near the residence halls at Virginia State University left five people injured early Saturday morning, Aug. 15.

Chesterfield County Police identified the suspect as Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico, Virginia. Harris is not a Virginia State University student.

According to authorities, the shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the university’s Quad Annexes and the 3300 block of Boisseau Street, outside campus residence halls. Five people between the ages of 17 and 23 were found suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police later located Harris at approximately 4 p.m. Saturday, more than 14 hours after the shooting. Authorities say he was found hiding inside a closet in Seward Hall, a residence hall on the VSU campus.

Harris was taken into custody and transported to the Chesterfield County Jail. Police obtained eight felony warrants against him, including four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond, and additional charges could be filed.

Five People Injured

Authorities said one of the victims, a 21-year-old man who is not a VSU student, remains in critical condition.

Three other victims — a 23-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy — suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The fifth victim was a 20-year-old Virginia State University student who also sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police said that student has since been released from the hospital.

Only one of the five victims was a VSU student.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The arrest has not ended the investigation. Authorities are continuing to determine exactly what led to the shooting and whether additional individuals were involved.

The Associated Press reports that investigators are also looking into reports that other people may have fired weapons during the incident, including whether those individuals were acting in self-defense or were also aggressors. (AP News)

The university temporarily placed the campus under lockdown following the shooting. The lockdown was later lifted after authorities determined there was no longer an immediate threat to the campus community.

Virginia State University, a historically Black university in Ettrick, Virginia, was preparing to begin its fall semester when the shooting occurred.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not announced a motive.
