ATLANTA, Ga. (January 10, 2022) – The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) has announced its men’s and women’s basketball Players of the Week.

For women, Amari Heard (Savannah State) was named Player of the Week, while Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim (Tuskegee) earned Newcomer of the Week.

For men, Marcus Scott V (Central State) was named Player of the Week, alongside, Asanti Price (Benedict) who earned Newcomer of the Week, released by the league office on Tuesday.

Women’s Basketball

PLAYER OF THE WEEK –  Amari Heard, Savannah State |Guard  |  Junior  |  West Point, Mississippi

Junior guard Amari Heard helped the Lady Tigers to a 2-1 record this week in key conference games. Heard combined for 48 points over three games, shooting 50 percent from the floor, and recorded two double-doubles. In a double-overtime loss to Lane on Wednesday, Heard scored 22 points and grabbed 12 boards. In a win against Fort Valley State, she scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds. Heard is ranked No. 3 in the SIAC in field goals made this season. 

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK – Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim, Tuskegee| Guard  |  Junior  |  Grand Prairie, Texas

Abdur-Rahim scored 58 points over the week, good for 19.3 per contest, along with shooting 56.8 (21-for-37) percent from the field over the trio of games. The transfer guard has been on a tear lately, scoring in double figures in four of the last five games, including a pair of 20-point games on the week against Allen (Jan. 2) and Kentucky State (Jan. 7). The guard also added averages of 4.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.3 steals per game over the span.

Men’s Basketball

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Marcus Scott V, Central State| Guard  |  Graduate Student  |  Hinesville, GA

Central State guard Marcus Scott V led the Marauders to victories over Morehouse and Spring Hill on his way to reaching 1,000 career points. Scott recorded 24 points and seven assists in Monday’s 85-80 road win at Morehouse. In a 72-71 win over Spring Hill, Scott finished with 22 points and six rebounds. The graduate student scored his 1,000th career point in the opening minutes of Saturday’s win.

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK– Asanti Price, Benedict| Guard  |  Junior  |  Columbia, S.C.

In his second week since joining the team in December, Price had a big week for the Tigers who went 1-2 on the week. Price averaged 15.7 points and three rebounds per game. He had a season-high 25 points and hit seven 3-pointers in a close loss to Tuskegee.
