CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Week Seven absolutely delivered with drama and action-packed finishes. The CIAA had its first overtime contest of the conference slate, there were game-winning touchdowns in the final minute, the gap between the top team and the bottom teams of each division were widened, plus two schools picked up their first wins of the season.
Let’s take a look at the week seven results for all teams across the conference:
#11 Virginia Union 27, Bowie State 24 (1OT) VUU: 7-0 (5-0 CIAA) BSU: 4-3 (3-2 CIAA)
The Panthers and Bulldogs delivered an absolute thriller in Maryland. In overtime, Virginia Union’s defense delivered an epic goal line stand of Bowie State and freshman kicker Brady Meyers clinched the Panthers’ win with a 42-yard field goal in the next possession. Overtime was needed after the Bulldogs’ Dion Golatt Jr. tied the game at 24-24 with 2:25 remaining in regulation. VUU’s Jada Byers continued his Harlon Hill Trophy campaign with 30 rushes for 277 yards and a touchdown to keep his squad undefeated. Byers gave the Panthers a 10-9 lead in the third quarter and receiver John Jiles (totaled eight catches for 80 yards) extended their lead to 17-9 with an 11-yard touchdown reception. The Bulldogs’ Larry Williams scored from four yards out and rushed for the two-point conversion to tie the game 17-17 in the fourth quarter. Golatt Jr. finished 30-of-44 passing for 303 yards and the one rushing touchdown and his leading receiver was Keshane Hinckley with 11 receptions for 97 yards. The Panthers’ defensive line duo of Armonii Burden and Ronald Johnson combined for six tackles for a loss and three sacks while the Bulldogs’ Jordan Ellison and Joshua Pryor combined for five tackles for a loss and four sacks.

Virginia State 40, Chowan 43 VSU: 4-3 (3-2 CIAA) Chowan: 4-3 (4-1 CIAA)
Chowan entered Saturday in a three-way tie for second place in the Northern Division. Sunday, Chowan sits in second by itself and is still just one-game behind division-leading Virginia Union. The Hawks achieved that thanks to a Nijere Peoples’ touchdown with 23 seconds remaining in the game. After trailing 28-12 at halftime, it appeared that Virginia State had completed a miraculous rally when Jordan Davis found Upton Bailey for a 25-yard score and their first lead of the day (40-35) with 52 seconds left in the contest. However, Chowan answered immediately when Rashad McKee completed a 51-yard pass to Demetrius Moore and two plays later came People’s game-winner. The Trojans’ Davis was 24-of-37 for 301 yards and two touchdowns while Kimo Clarke contributed two rushing touchdowns and Bailey had a rushing and a receiving touchdown. In his first start of the season for the Hawks, McKee passed for 119 yards and rushed for 139 and a touchdown. Jordaan Bailey (61 rushing yards and 49 receiving) and Peoples (60 rushing yards) each had two rushing touchdowns for Chowan. VSU’s Miqueal Pillow-Smiley had a game-high four tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks while Willie Drew added another interception in this game to his conference lead of five. For the Hawks, Montre Moore’s 14 tackles will keep him leading the CIAA and Jamae Blank added eight tackles, three stops for a loss, and a forced fumble.

Lincoln (PA) 19, Elizabeth City State 21 LUPA: 2-4 (1-3 CIAA) ECSU: 2-5 (2-3 CIAA)
With 47 seconds remaining in the game, Lincoln’s Isaiah Freeman found Eli Riddick for a 14-yard touchdown and the 21-19 score but the ensuing two-point conversion fell incomplete. The Vikings had took a 15-10 lead with an 80-yard touchdown to Josiah Hayes from Chase Williams and another Williams’ touchdown pass gave ECSU another cushion in the fourth quarter. Both freshman quarterbacks played really well. Williams was 12-of-20 for 219 yards and two touchdowns while Freeman was 16-of-25 for 284 and two scores. Amir Gerald added 110 yards on 15 rushes for the Lions. ECSU’s Zion Riddick had five receptions for 73 yards and the fourth quarter touchdown catch. Defensively, Lincoln’s Mike Johnson had a game-high 11 tackles and 2.5 stops for a loss and Kai Gray added seven total tackles, including six solo stops. For ECSU, Devan Joslin and Teonne Porter each had seven tackles, a team-high.

Shaw 10, Winston-Salem State 17 Shaw: 2-5 (2-3 CIAA) WSSU: 1-5 (1-3 CIAA)
Winston-Salem State earned its first win of the season and it turned out the recipe was simple — Bowman Gray Stadium. Playing at home for the first time this season, the Rams’ Asa Barnes rushed for 133 yards on 22 carries, the defense racked up seven sacks and two interceptions against Shaw, and the special teams delivered the play of the game. Tied 10-10 midway through the third quarter, the Bears lined up for a 31-yard field goal but the attempt was blocked by Narique Smith and Willie Blackstone recovered and returned the ball 68 yards for the go-ahead WSSU touchdown. Shaw’s Patrick Blake was 17-of-26 for 141 yards and a score and running back Sidney Gibbs had 69 rushing yards on five rushes. Joerail White led Shaw with 11 tackles and he had a fumble recovery. The Rams’ Camar Kyle had seven tackles, three stops for a loss, and 2.5 sacks while Freddie Johnson Jr. had an 81-yard interception return, setting up WSSU’s offense at the one-yard line, resulting in a Rams’ score on the very next play.

Fayetteville State 44, Livingstone 7 FSU: 5-2 (4-1 CIAA) LC: 2-5 (1-4 CIAA)
It was a good day for FSU as the Broncos won and saw their hold over the Southern Division go to two games. For the second consecutive game, FSU topped 500 yards of offense and its defense held another opponent to under 175 yards. The Broncos’ signalcaller Demari Daniels got his second start, going six-of-eight for 112 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 52. Caden Davis was the Broncos’ leading rusher with 90 yards on seven carries. After having two receptions for two touchdowns and 88 yards in this contest, FSU’s Barry Elliott now has five catches for five touchdowns in the past two weeks. Elliott also had a rushing touchdown. The Blue Bears scored their only touchdown of the game in the second quarter when Silas Cruse connected with Lasirton Bryant from 13 yards out. Cruse completed 21 passes for 112 yards and Bryant had a game-high five catches. Defensively, FSU recorded a season-high eight sacks with Cameron Merrell and John Oxce each recording 1.5 sacks. Bronco Gerald Simpson’s nine tackles were a game-high and he had a fumble recovery. For Livingstone, Will Tims and Zavion Lloyd each had a team-high seven tackles. Tims forced a fumble and Lloyd had a sack and a fumble recovery. Kevin Larkins Jr. recorded an interception for the Blue Bears.

Johnson C. Smith 25, St. Augustine’s 28 JCSU: 2-4 (2-3 CIAA) SAU: 1-6 (1-4 CIAA)
St. Augustine earned its first win of the season and snapped a two-game winning streak by the Golden Bulls. Thanks to a healthy diet of big plays (all four Falcons’ touchdowns were at least 38 yards) and timely defensive stops, the Falcons got the W. Avonte George started the party with a 38-yard touchdown run, followed by a 63-yard interception returned for a touchdown from D’Andre Tolson for a 14-6 lead. Chris Perkins extended St. Aug’s lead to 28-11 entering the fourth quarter by finding Mekhi Hague for a 40-yard score and Deandre Proctor for a 39-yarder. The Golden Bulls cut the deficit to 28-25 with less than nine minutes to go when Malik Evans linked up with Reginald Bryant but the Falcons held on. Perkins finished with 150 yards passing and 87 rushing. George also had 87 yards on the ground. In relief, Evans almost completed the comeback, he was six-of-eight passing for 86 yards and a score, plus a touchdown on the ground. JCSU’s Jack Smith had a game-high nine tackles and Benari Black had eight tackles, plus two stops for a loss. On defensive for St. Aug, Jamieson Alston’s seven tackles led the team.
