BIRMINGHAM, Ala.| The Jackson State women’s basketball team got a 24-point showing from the bench on the way to a 70-48 victory against the UAPB Golden Lions at Bartow Arena Friday to advance to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship game on Saturday.
The Tigers had four players score in double figures, led by Andriana Avent, who had 19 points and two steals. Ti’lan Boler tacked on 19 points and seven rebounds and Angel Jacksonhelped out with a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Jackson State out-rebounded UAPB 55-40 in Friday’s game, led by Jackson’s 12 boards. The Tigers also grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and scored 16 second chance points.
JSU came away with nine blocks in the matchup. Jackson’s six rejections led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (25-6) started out the scoring by going on a 10-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Keshuna Luckett, to take an early lead with 4:50 left in the first quarter.
- The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-10 advantage.
- JSU built that first quarter lead to 24-16 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 3:57 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 32-16.
- The Tigers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 38-20 advantage heading into halftime.
- Jackson State forced six UAPB turnovers in the period and turned them into nine points.
- JSU continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Avent, to expand its lead further to 49-28 with 2:53 to go in the third.
- Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Lions had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 51-34 edge.
- Jackson State’s bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team’s 13 third-quarter points.
- JSU kept widening that lead, expanding it to 60-41 before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 65-41 with 3:46 to go in the contest.
- The Golden Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-48 win.
- Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring eight of its 19 total points.
