Falling behind by double digits early Southern came roaring back to defeat Alabama A&M on the road, 25-20.
Up 7-0 in the second quarter, and after a Donivan Wright 28-yard punt return set
Alabama A&M at the Southern 21-yard line, the Bulldogs seemed poised to take a two-touchdown lead. However, the Southern defense was able to force AAMU to settle for a 21-yard Victor Barbosa field goal that made the score 10-0. Southern responded with an 8-play, 70-yard drive that ended when Czavian Teasett connected with Darren Morris on a 15-yard scoring toss that cut the AAMU lead to 10-6, as the PAT was no good. However, despite the botched extra point this touchdown was the start of 19 unanswered points that extended late into the third quarter. Barbosa’s second
field goal of the game finally stopped the proverbial bleeding and trimmed the now deficit Alabama A&M found themselves to 19-13. Xavier Langford’s 9-yard touchdown run culminated a 7-play, 71-yard drive that put Alabama A&M back out in front 20-19.
Tessett was able engineer a 10-play, 75-yard drive that produced the go-ahead score, a 14-yard connection with Dupree Fuller that put the Jags out in front for good, 25-20. Teasett completed 24-of-37 passes for 294 yards and 3 touchdowns on the afternoon.
The lifts Southern above .500 at 5-4 overall and at 4-1, to the top of the SWAC West, with a 1-game lead over Alcorn State, who sits at 3-2 on the conference and 4-5 overall. Up next for Southern is a home game next week against Bethune-Cookman, whom Southern defeated 28-18 last season.
The loss drops Alabama A&M to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the SWAC. Up next for the Bulldogs is a trip to Simmons Bank Field where the Lions of Arkansas Pine Bluff await. AAMU defeated UAPB 31-24 in their meeting last season.
