It was a rough day at the office for the Tigers of Edward Waters, as they found themselves on the business end of a 55-7 donkey-kicking from defending conference champion Albany State University.
Albany State wasted no time getting the scoring started, as Joe Shorter took the opening kickoff a90 yards to the house to put the Golden Rams up 6-0 , as the PAT was missed, just 12 seconds into the contest. Edward Waters would take the lead via their defense later in the quarter when Ahmaud Jordan intercepted a Dionte Bonneau and took it back 70 yards for a 7-6 Tiger lead.
It was a lead Edward Waters would enjoy for approximately three minutes, as Albany State responded on their very next drive, with Kamran Ward’s 1-yard touchdown run put the Golden Rams up 13-7. After the ASU defense forced a three-and-out on the next Edwards Waters possession, the Albany State offense needed just three plays to get back in the end zone when Bonneau connected with Rashad Jordan on a 64-yard scoring strike that extended the Golden Ram advantage to 20-7 late in the first quarter.
When the game entered the second quarter, the Golden Ram offense was still in its groove . On their first offensive possession of the period, completions of 27 and 49 yards to Derrian Hall put the ASU offense on the Waters 2-yard line. Marcuis Fulks punched it in from that distance on the next play to make the count 27-7.
The teams exchanged punts and Albany State returned to their scoring ways, pushing the lead to 34-7 after Jhaydon Sullivan was the next Ram to get in the end zone, running it in from 5-yards out.
Albany State’s first possession of the second half once again ended in points, when Kamran Ward , out of the wildcat formation, took it in from 14 yards out to put the Golden Rams up by 34 points at 41-7.
Jhaydon Sullivan, in at quarterback with Bonneau exiting the contest, found Cameron Hopkins in the end zone from nine yards as the Albany State onslaught continued, with the score now at 48-7. Tori Sapp Jr’s 9-yard run mercifully put an end to scoring at 55-7.
Albany State piled up 549 yards of offense, with Bonneau throwing for a season-high 293 yards. Running back Marcuis Fulks turned in a solid performance with 61 yards and a touchdown; his backfield mate Kamran Ward led the team with 63 yards and two touchdowns on just 6 carries, with Tori Sapp Jr running for 52 yards and touchdown on nine attempts. Defensively the Golden Rams defense was stifling, choking the Edward Waters offense to just 94 total yards ( 44 ypassing and 50 rushing ).
Edward Waters heads to Greensboro, to take on the Big South’s and formerly of the MEAC, North Carolina A&T; kickoff is set for 1:00 pm EST.
Albany State host Benedict for homecoming in a pivotal SIAC matchup; kickoff is scheduled for 2;00 pm EST.
