Saturday Benedict did something that has not happened since October 29, 2019– beating Albamy State in a regular season SIAC game. The 24-20 defeat not only ended the Golden Rams’ four game winning streak on the season, but a ten-game conference streak as well.

Benedict went right to work, taking the opening kickoff and driving 85 yards, taking a 7-0 lead on Eric Pnoenix’s 10-yard scoring pass to Billy Pierre. Benedict extended to a two-touchdown advantage at 14-0 early in the second quarter when Deondra Duehart ran in from 5-yards out.

After failing to convert on a 4th and 2 in the red zone, Albany State finished the job on their next possession. A bad punt from Jared Eubanks set the Golden Rams up at the Benedict 25 yard line. Four plays later the Benedict lead was cut in half ,14-7 , when Kamran Ward got,in the endzone from 5-yards out.

Benedict tacked on a 20-yard Davis Rogers field goal made the score 17-7 lead heading into halftime. On Benedict’s opening drive of the third quarter , Phoenix was intercepted by Antuan Rosser. A 93-yard touchdown from Dionte Bonneau to Rashad Jordan to trim the lead to three points at 17-14.

Albany State’s defense showed they were still firmly in the takeaway business, as De’Travion Bishop forced Tayven Grice to cough up the football, which Bishop also recovered at the Benedict 34-yard line. Unfortunately for Albany State they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity, as they, rather than attempt a game-tying field goal, attempted to convert a 4th nd 3 from the Benedict 27 and for the second time on the day, was unable to convert.

The Tigers responded on their very next possession, completing a 7-play, 71-yard drive with a 4-yard run from Eric Phoenix to put Benedict back out in front by ten a 24-14. A late touchdown by Albany State narrowed the gap to 24-20 but the extra point was blocked by Daythan Peterson.

The subsequent onside kick was recovered by Benedict and inexplicably Benedict, after three kneel downs, open to attempt to run on 4th and 13 and Stephan Pierre, forced a fumble on the play. Albany State’s Malachi Brown recovered but a series of laterals was ultimately forced out of bounds at the Benedict 20-yard line, ending the game.

Benedict looks to keep things next week, when they head to Atlanta to take on Morehouse; kickoff is scheduled for 2 pm EST.

Albany State will look to return to winning ways, and keep pace with Benedict, next week, hitting the road to Savannah, GA to face off with Savannah State. The kickoff for that contest is set at 5 pm EST.
