Boris Diaw says Joel Embiid wanted to play for French national team

Could Joel Embiid have been part helping the French national team pursue the EuroBasket crown? According to national team GM Boris Diaw , the Philadelphia 76ers big man was considering joining the team for the 2022 EuroBasket.

Diaw indicated that Embiid is in the process of being registered as a French national team player , were not for a surgery to his injured finger, he could have been part of the French team.

“His [Joel Embiid’s] request for naturalization has been accepted,” said. “We know that he’s still waiting for the French passport. When he obtains it, then he can start the process and apply for a FIBA license for the national team. He would’ve liked to play this summer if he hadn’t been injured. But he underwent hand surgery and didn’t return to basketball.”

The team will also be without red-hot prospect, Victor Wembanyama, who suffered what’s being called a ”muscle” injury during the Jeep Elite Playoffs.

The probability is that Embiid debuts for the team for the 2023 World Cup, provided the team qualifies.
