BOWIE, MD —  A trio of Bowie State women’s basketball players scored in double figures to feul a deserved 54-48 home victory over the visiting Lady Panthers of Virginia Union (8-10, 2-6 CIAA, 0-3 North) in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division action Saturday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

Led by sophomore Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, redshirt sophomore Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) added 10 points and four rebounds while sophomore Saniha Jackson(Ellicott City, MD) chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior Robyn Howard (Temple Hills, MD) added seven points and three steals to her eight-rebound game (career-high) for the Bulldogs (9-8, 5-3 CIAA, 2-1 North). Harris also helped out with five rebounds and three steals while Jackson contributed two steals and two blocks to add to her stat line. 

Howard pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Bowie State, grabbing 20 boards and turning them into 17 second chance points.

The Bowie State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday’s game, forcing 22 Virginia Union turnovers while committing 13. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Myers led the way individually for the Bulldogs with three steals.

How It Happened

Bowie State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 15-13. The Bulldogs then rallied, outscoring the Panthers 11-8 in the second quarter to take a 24-23 halftime lead over the Lady Panthers. 

After intermission, BSU added to its advantage and owned a 39-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Bowie State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.

Bowie State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Harris’ layup, to grow the lead to 53-43 with 40 seconds to go in the contest. The Lady Panthers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs sustained its momentum for the 54-48 win.

Game Notes

» The Bulldogs held the Panthers to only 35.6 percent shooting from the field.
» BSU had a 43-41 edge on the boards in the win.
» The Bowie State defense forced 22 turnovers.
» Bowie State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 20 offensive boards in the game.
» Harris led the Bulldogs with 18 points.
» Bowie State got a team-high 8 rebounds from Howard.
