Fayetteville, N.C. – Fayetteville State knocked off the giant of Livingstone, 77-69, in Capel Arena tonight. The Broncos, who are now 6-16 overall, 5-10 in the CIAA, and 4-4 in the Southern Division. FSU is now on a two-game win-streak.
The Broncos’ three starting guards of Mark Burton, JaQuel Richmond, and Joshua Bryant scored in double figures. Burton made 5-of-9 three-pointers for 15 points while the tag-team play of Richmond and Bryant led to 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Livingstone, who drops to 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the conference, trailed 36-33 and halftime and only led by one-point in the second half on three occasions.
FSU led 43-36 with 16:06 remaining until the Blue Bears captured a 45-44 lead within a four-minute span.
After a 50-49 score, Xavier Williams’ layup in the paint sparked a Fayetteville State three-minute run that would give the Broncos a 57-50 lead with 7:06 left in the game.
Kenny Grant broke the run with back-to-back layups to cut the Broncos lead to three (57-54) but another stampede by the Broncos gave FSU a 12-point lead (69-57), its largest lead of the game, with 3:24 left in regulation.
Ray Roger, who led the Blue Bears with 17 points, scored seven of those points in the final three minutes of the game.
Burton countered those points with two huge three-pointers that kept the Bronco-momentum going.
Cameryn Carpenter and Lydell Elmore both scored 14 points for Livingstone.
Fayetteville State will travel to its arch nemesis Winston-Salem State on Saturday for a 4 pm game in the C.E. Gaines Center.
