TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Jaylen Bates collected 13 rebounds and Jordan Chatman added 9 more, and the Florida A&M men’s basketball team beat the Albany State (GA) Golden Rams 70-65 at home Monday.

Bates and Chatman’s fantastic rebounding performances led the Rattlers (1-4) in the contest. Bates tacked on 10 points and Chatman added 18 points and three steals. Byron Smith also helped out with 13 points and three steals.

Chatman pulled down six offensive rebounds to pace the Florida A&M offense which grabbed 24 boards and turned them into 33 second chance points.

Florida A&M did a great job disrupting Albany State (GA) shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Saiyd Burnside led the way individually for the Rattlers with two rejections.

How It Happened

After falling behind 17-9, Florida A&M went on a 9-0 run with 7:35 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Smith, to take an 18-17 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 24-21.

Albany State (GA) kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 26-21 advantage before Florida A&M went on an 11-0 run, finished off by Smith’s three, to seize a 32-26 lead with 16:58 to go in the contest. The Golden Rams then fought back to even things up at 59-59 and send the game to overtime. Florida A&M took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 38 points in the lane.

Florida A&M grabbed a 61-59 lead with 4:31 left in the first overtime before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Chatman’s jumper, to grow its advantage to 66-59 with 2:38 to go in the period. The Golden Rams narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rattlers still held on for the 70-65 win.
