Grambling State University Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Trayvean Scott, announced the hiring of new Lady Tigers head bowling coach Allamont Bates on Monday.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Allamont Bates to Grambling State University and to be our next head bowling coach,” Scott said. “Coach Bates brings more than 20 years of coaching experience and is extremely passionate about the sport and the student-athletes.”

Bates said he is thrilled to have the opportunity to coach bowling and looks forward to the challenge.

“I am very excited and enthusiastic about being named the head coach at Grambling State University,” he said. “My goal is to come in, teach these young ladies and develop them, not just on the bowling lanes, but in the classroom as well.”

Bates joins Grambling State after more than three years as a successful bowling coach at Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport, La. While at Captain Shreve, Bates developed the student-athletes by teaching the fundamentals of bowling, while devising strategic individual training programs.

Bates guided the boys program to two straight district championship (2021 and 2022), a regional playoff appearance in 2018 and state playoff appearances in 2019, 2021 and 2022. The 2021 team finished fourth in the state.

In addition to the team garnering attention, Bates had 26 all-district athletes, with two receiving a college scholarship.

The Shreveport, La. native has been a competitive bowler for more than 20 years, where he served as the TNBA Shreveport/Bossier President for five years.

Bates, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Global Management from Wiley College and a Master of Science in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University, is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
