Position Breakdown: Part 4 – Offensive Line

The Grambling State University football program is doing a nine-part series, as we look to breakdown each position. Today, we take a look at our offensive line.

Position Coach: Robert Valdez

Last week we focused on quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers, but guys in the trenches will tell you they don’t get any credit. Those guys are the offensive linemen and allow the quarterback to have time in the pocket and open up holes in the running game.

With fall camp underway, Valdez has had a good mix of returners and newcomers to work with on the offensive line.

“The offensive lineman are working hard and are working to get one percent better each day,” Valdez said. “We have a good group of guys and every practice gives us a chance to see difference scenarios that will help us during the season. The most impressive thing about our offensive linemen is that they are here everyday. They are playing through pain, heat and a fast-paced schedule.”

With the Tigers scrimmaging on Saturday for the first time during fall camp, head coach Hue Jackson gave the team off on Sunday, before hitting the practice field on Monday. However, the heat not only played a factor in practice, but a late afternoon thunderstorm halted the rest of practice.

Jackson, who is in his first year at Grambling State, continues to expect the best not just from the student-athletes, but the coaches as well.

“Coach Jackson has brought a standard of how to go about our daily procedures and discipline that will lead us to success,” Valdez said.

Valdez was a late addition to the coaching staff and comes with a tremendous coaching background, having won a state championship at St. James High School.
