Haynes-Overton’s 22 points helps to push Tennessee State past Lipscomb, 74-64

Erica Haynes-Overton scored 22 points to lead the Tennessee State women’s basketball team \with a 74-64 win over Lipscomb on Saturday.

The Lady Tigers (4-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Haynes-Overton, who had 22 points and two steals. Gia Adams tacked on 17 points and three steals and Lyric Cole chipped in as well with a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Tennessee State grabbed 42 rebounds in Saturday’s game compared to Lipscomb’s 34, led by Cole’s 12 boards. The Lady Tigers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 10 rebounds into seven second-chance points.

Tennessee State forced 17 Lipscomb turnovers while committing 16 themselves in Saturday’s game. The Lady Tigers turned those takeaways into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Adams’ three steals led the way for Tennessee State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-0, Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run with 6:44 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Haynes-Overton, to take a 6-5 lead. The Lady Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 20-15.

Tennessee State then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Haynes-Overton, to take a 21-20 lead. The Lady Tigers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 38-35 advantage heading into halftime. Tennessee State dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 23 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Tennessee State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 42-37 before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Adams, to expand its lead further to 51-37 with 4:18 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Bison had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 56-47 edge. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.

Tennessee State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 73-59 with 1:30 to go in the contest. The Lady Bison narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-64 win. Tennessee State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 18 total points.
