NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State women’s basketball team had 11 fewer turnovers than Eastern Illinois, but fell 63-58 to the Panthers at home Thursday.

The Lady Tigers (7-11, 2-5 OVC) had three players score in double figures, led by Saniah Parker, who had 15 points, six rebounds and three steals. Erica Haynes-Overton added 14 points, five assists and five steals and Ashley Malone helped out with 13 points from the bench.

Zyion Shannon pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Tennessee State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into nine second chance points.

Tennessee State forced 25 Eastern Illinois turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Thursday’s game. The Lady Tigers turned those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Haynes-Overton’s five steals led the way for Tennessee State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 8-2, Tennessee State went on a 7-0 run with 7:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Malone, to take a 9-8 lead. The Lady Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 21-16.

The Lady Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 36-26 halftime deficit.

After intermission, Tennessee State cut its deficit to 42-34 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Malone, to trim its deficit to 42-39 with 1:51 to go in the third. Eastern Illinois countered and stretched its lead to 46-39 heading into the fourth. Tennessee State took advantage of five Eastern Illinois turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.

Tennessee State narrowed its deficit in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump, losing 63-58. Tennessee State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.
