Saint Augustine’s University, Shaw University and Academy Sports + Outdoors donated $5,000 in gift cards to two local youth programs earlier this month.
The Wake County Boys & Girls Club and the Capital City Steelers Junior/Peewee Football Team each received a $2,500 gift card to Academy Sports + Outdoors in Apex, N.C. The gift cards enabled the youth programs to buy new equipment, gear, apparel, footwear and other school items.
The gift card presentation was held during the Raleigh Classic football game between crosstown schools Saint Augustine’s University and Shaw University at the George Williams Athletic Complex on Nov. 6.
Senior Woman Administrators Dot Neal of Saint Augustine’s University and Nancy Lake of Shaw University represented their respective schools during the presentation, which they spearheaded.
The gift card giveaway was part of an initiative between the CIAA and Academy Sports + Outdoors, a full-line sporting goods and outdoor recreation retailer in the U.S.
The multi-year partnership between Academy Sports + Outdoors and the CIAA focuses on establishing meaningful community initiatives within the CIAA footprint. Specifically, these initiatives look to activate and amplify grassroots efforts, such as youth outreach and mentoring programs, that are inclusive of student-athletes and administrators from across the conference.
