Marcus Smart reportedly considering free agency; Rockets expected to pursue reunion with Ime Udoka

The Los Angeles Lakers could be in danger of losing one of their veteran leaders this offseason.

According to Marc Stein, Marcus Smart is seriously considering declining his $5.4 million player option and entering unrestricted free agency. If he reaches the open market, the Houston Rockets are expected to express interest in bringing the veteran guard aboard for a reunion with head coach Ime Udoka.

Smart and Udoka enjoyed success together during their time with the Boston Celtics, where Smart developed into one of the league’s premier perimeter defenders under Udoka’s leadership. That familiarity could make Houston an attractive destination if Smart decides to test the market.

For the Rockets, adding Smart would be about much more than scoring. The former Defensive Player of the Year would provide championship experience, elite on-ball defense, toughness, and leadership to one of the NBA’s most promising young cores. Houston took a major step forward last season, and a veteran like Smart could help elevate the team as it looks to become a legitimate contender in the Western Conference.

The Lakers, meanwhile, would face the challenge of replacing a player who brought intensity, defensive versatility, and veteran poise whenever he was on the floor. While Smart’s offensive production has fluctuated throughout his career, his impact has consistently extended beyond the box score.

With free agency approaching, Smart’s decision will be one of several veteran dominoes that could shape the NBA offseason.
