MEAC announces Weekly Men’s Basketball Honourees

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 3, 2023 – Senior guard Malik Miller of Morgan State has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the league announced today.Howard University freshman forward Shy Odom was named Rookie of the Week, and graduate forward Nathaniel Pollard, Jr. of Maryland Eastern Shore was announced as the Defensive Player of the Week.


 
Malik Miller (6-4, Sr., G, Washington, D.C.) 

Miller was one rebound shy of a double-double against Hartford, dropping a game-high 28 points to go along with nine boards, six steals, three assists and a blocked shot. His all-around effort came on 10-for-21 shooting  (.480), a 2-for-4 effort from behind the arc and six of nine made free throws and helped the Bears secure their first road win of the season.


 
Shy Odom (6-6, Fr., F, Chestnut Hill, Mass.)

Odom scored a career-high 22 points on 9-for-12 shooting against La Salle, while also grabbing six rebounds, blocking two shots and dishing out a pair of assists.
 


Nathaniel Pollard (6-5, Gr., F, Richmond, Va.)

The graduate forward averaged 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 blocks per game this past week. Of his 20 rebounds (12 of which came against Columbia), nine were on the defensive end, and he had multiple blocks in each of the Hawks’ two games – two against Columbia and three against St. Mary’s (Md.). He also grabbed six steals in the St. Mary’s contest.


 
Other Top Performers
Greg Spurlock (Coppin State) grabbed nine rebounds against Rutgers after notching three steals against Richmond.
 
Sam Sessoms (Coppin State) had 13 points and four assists against Richmond, before turning in a 12-point effort at Rutgers.
 
Elijah Hawkins (Howard) notched 20 points, to go along with four rebounds, four steals and four assists, against La Salle.
 
Dionte Johnson (Maryland Eastern Shore) had six points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists against St. Mary’s (Md.).
