Winston-Salem State University is entering a new era of growth after receiving a nearly $45 million investment from the State of North Carolina, providing critical funding for campus modernization, scholarship opportunities, workforce development and institutional support.
The investment represents one of the largest recent commitments to the university and reinforces the importance of historically Black colleges and universities in shaping the future workforce and communities across the state.
A Major Investment in the Future of the Rams
The funding package includes nearly $40 million dedicated to capital improvements, allowing WSSU to continue transforming its campus infrastructure.
Major projects include:
- Completion and modernization of K.R. Williams Auditorium
- Renovations and improvements to Eller Hall
- Upgrades to Pegram Hall
- Additional campus infrastructure improvements
These projects are designed to enhance the student experience while preserving the university’s historic campus for future generations of Rams.
Expanding Opportunities Through Scholarships
A major component of the investment is expanding access to elite scholarship opportunities.
Beginning in the 2027–28 academic year, Winston-Salem State University will be among only three North Carolina HBCUs authorized to participate in the Cheatham-White Scholarship Program, allowing the university to award up to 50 merit-based scholarships annually.
The expansion gives WSSU another tool to attract high-achieving students and provide greater access to a premier HBCU education.
Strengthening North Carolina’s Healthcare Pipeline
As one of the state’s leading producers of healthcare professionals, WSSU will also benefit from investments aimed at addressing workforce needs.
The university will participate in the Nursing Fellows Forgivable Education Loan Pilot Program, helping prepare more students for careers in nursing and healthcare.
With healthcare demand continuing to grow, WSSU’s role in developing future medical professionals remains a critical part of North Carolina’s workforce strategy.
Supporting Faculty and Staff
The investment also includes support for university employees, including a 3% salary increase for eligible faculty and staff.
