ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Graduate quarterback Corey Fields, Jr. connected on 21 of 31 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns to lead South Carolina State to an upset 26-24 victory over previously top-ranked North Carolina Central on Saturday at Willie Jeffries Field at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
Redshirt senior wide receiver Shaquan Davis made the difference on the offensive side with six catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Kendrell Flowers controlled the rushing attack with 23 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles (5-2, 1-1 MEAC) had scored 10 unanswered points in the third quarter to take a 24-20 lead, but Fields and Davis connected to end a 5-play, 53-yard drive with a 21-yard score with 12:03 left in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs (3-4, 1-0 MEAC) the winning margin.
Zion Keith, Aaron Smith and Patrick Godbolt each finished with seven tackles, while Godbolt added 2 TFL’s and one sack.
Howard 35, Delaware State 17
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Quarterback Quinton Williams accounted for three touchdowns and Howard rushed for 266 yards as the Bison celebrated Homecoming with a 35-17 win over Delaware State on Saturday at Greene Stadium.
The Bison (2-5, 1-0 MEAC) were in front of the home crowd for the first time this season on a sun-splashed afternoon, dominating the MEAC’s top defense. Howard had 376 yards of total offense and averaged 6.6 yards per play, while the Hornets (4-3, 1-1 MEAC) only had 275 offensive yard.
Williams threw for two touchdowns — one in the first quarter and another in the third — and also scored on a 6-yard run in the third quarter. Kasey Hawthorne and Jarrett Hunter each had highlight plays for the Bison: Hawthorne a 75-yard scoring run out of the Wildcat formation in the second quarter and Hunter a 74-yard score in the fourth.
Hunter was the Bison’s leading rusher with 89 yards on nine carries.
No. 12/13 Delaware 38, Morgan State 7
NEWARK, Del. — Morgan State was only down seven at the half, but No. 12/13 Delaware put up 24 unanswered in the second half on Saturday to celebrate Homecoming with a 38-7 victory over the Bears at Delaware Stadium.
The Bears fell to 2-5 on the season and will resume MEAC play next weekend against South Carolina State.
Alfonzo Graham led Morgan State’s offense with 83 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown — a 2-yard run with 1:23 left in the first half to cut the Blue Hens’ lead to 14-7.
