Olden Polynice has sparked a major debate about LeBron James’ legacy after arguing that the four-time NBA champion has underachieved during his legendary career.
Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Polynice pointed to Russell Westbrook’s historic triple-double season as evidence that James left statistical accomplishments on the table.
The former NBA center believes LeBron, given his extraordinary all-around ability, should have been capable of averaging a triple-double—and the fact that Westbrook accomplished the feat before him is something that should be considered when evaluating James’ legacy.
That is a bold statement considering what LeBron has accomplished throughout his career.
LeBron Came Close
There was a legitimate period when LeBron appeared capable of becoming the next player to average a triple-double for an entire season.
During the 2017-18 season, James averaged:

He finished less than one rebound and one assist per game away from the milestone.
Russell Westbrook, meanwhile, became the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double for an entire season when he accomplished the feat during the 2016-17 campaign.
Westbrook averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists that season.
He went on to average a triple-double in multiple seasons, achieving the feat in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2020-21
Was LeBron Really an Underachiever?
This is where Polynice’s argument becomes controversial.
Calling LeBron an underachiever requires an extremely high definition of success.
James has won four NBA championships, four regular-season MVP awards and four Finals MVP awards. He is also the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and has spent more than two decades putting up numbers at an extremely high level.
Yet Polynice’s argument isn’t necessarily that LeBron wasn’t successful.
It is that LeBron’s extraordinary talent created an even higher expectation.
James has long been viewed as one of the most complete players in basketball history. He has the ability to score, rebound and facilitate.
So Polynice’s argument becomes:
If a player possesses that combination of size, athleticism, basketball IQ and passing ability, should averaging a triple-double have been achievable?
The Westbrook Comparison
Westbrook’s accomplishment actually makes the debate even more interesting.
Westbrook wasn’t expected to become the first player since Robertson to average a triple-double when he did it in 2017 when her posted per game averages of 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists , winning the league MVP , named All-NBA First Team as he led the Kevin Durant-less Thunder to a 45-37 record and the 6th seed in the Western Conference.
His historic season demonstrated just how difficult the accomplishment was—and how much statistical production was required to reach it.
LeBron had multiple seasons in which he was within striking distance, but even in his 23 season, the feat remains one that has eluded his expansive career.
The Bigger Legacy Question
The debate ultimately isn’t about whether LeBron James is an all-time great.
He certainly is.
The question that Polynice poses is whether James’ unprecedented combination of physical gifts and basketball ability means the standard for evaluating his career should be different.
Did LeBron accomplish everything he realistically could?
Or are there statistical and championship accomplishments that he should have added to his résumé?
Polynice clearly believes the latter.
And that has opened the door for one enormous NBA debate:

OLDEN POLYNICE: LeBron’s talent was so extraordinary that failing to average a triple-double before Russell Westbrook is a blemish on his legacy.
THE COUNTER: LeBron’s career shouldn’t be judged by whether he accumulated one particular statistical achievement. Four championships, four MVPs, four Finals MVPs and the all-time scoring record make calling his career an “underachievement” difficult to justify.
