Patrick Ewing Returns to NBA Sidelines as Assistant Coach for Washington Wizards

Basketball Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing is headed back to an NBA bench.

According to ESPN, the Georgetown and New York Knicks legend has agreed to join the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach under head coach Brian Keefe. Ewing had most recently served as a basketball ambassador for the Knicks but will now return to a full-time coaching role in the nation’s capital.

The move marks another chapter in Ewing’s extensive coaching career. Before taking over at his alma mater, Georgetown, in 2017, Ewing spent more than a decade as an NBA assistant coach with the Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets, and Houston Rockets.

Ewing coached the Hoyas for six seasons, highlighted by a Big East Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021. After departing Georgetown in 2023, he returned to the Knicks organization in an ambassador role, reconnecting with the franchise where he became one of the greatest players in team history.

Now, Ewing returns to the sidelines with a young Wizards team looking to accelerate its rebuilding process. His experience as an NBA Hall of Famer, former head coach, and longtime assistant gives Washington another respected voice to help develop its promising core.

For the Wizards, adding one of basketball’s most accomplished big men and respected mentors is another significant step as the organization continues building for the future.
