SIAC East Football Recap: Albany State gets emotional win over Fort Valley in Fountain City Classic

COLUMBUS, GA  – Albany State executed its fifth shutout of the season defeating arch rival Fort Valley State, 57-0, to capture the 31st annual Fountain City Classic on Saturday in SIAC play at AJ McClung Stadium in Columbus, Ga. 

Albany State (9-1, 6-0 SIAC) entered the game after an emotional week with the loss of player Adonis Butler, however the team honored him scoring his jersey number 57 for the win.

In the fourth quarter, with ASU up 51-0, backup quarterback Jhaydon Sullivan hit a streaking Jaleel Johnson for a 37-yard touchdown with 7:15 remaining.  With the score at 57-0, ASU would kneel and not pass the number of the fallen teammate.

The recognition in the stands by ASU fans as to what had happened was a moment as ASU rushed to find Butler’s family and present them with the ball that scored the final touchdown.

Dionte Bonneau passed for 107 yards after completing 7-of-10 pass attempts for three touchdowns while running for a score. 

Kamran Ward ran for 103 yards on nine carries (11.4 avg.). Joe Shorter caught two touchdowns for a total of 62 yards. Ralph Lovett and Jaleel Johnson each added a touchdown to help power the offense.

The Golden Rams collected five sacks with J’Shawn Baker and Stephan Pierre leading the way with seven tackles apiece. Eric Price, Jaree Turner, Etan Bell, Derek Davis, and Roderick Welch each recorded a sack.

Emmanuel Wilson led FVSU (5-5, 2-3 SIAC) with 108 rushing yards on 26 attempts (4.2 avg.). Quarterback Jaylen Joyner completed 11-of-20 pass attempts for 80 yards.

The Wildcats’ defense was led by Zachary Anderson’s seven tackles. Jahseari Patterson pitched in a sack.
